How Long Does a Made-to-Order Dress Take?

A made-to-order dress takes time by design.

Unlike ready-to-wear, it does not already exist in finished inventory. The piece begins only once it has been chosen. That slower rhythm is not a limitation. It is part of what gives the dress its intention.

At HERI, our made-to-order dresses typically require 4–6 weeks. The timeline is part of the process, and part of the value.

What “Made-to-Order Timing” Actually Means

Made-to-order timing is often mistaken for simple delay. In reality, it reflects the fact that the dress is produced after purchase, rather than pulled from existing stock.

A made-to-order timeline usually includes:

order confirmation
production
finishing
quality control
shipment preparation

The piece is not simply selected and sent. It is brought into being more deliberately.

Why It Takes Time

Time in made-to-order is not empty time.

It is the time required for the dress to be properly made—for the line, structure, and finish to feel resolved. In occasionwear, that difference matters. A dress intended for a wedding, formal evening, or significant celebration should not feel hurried in its making.

Some pieces deserve a slower process.

When to Order

The right moment is usually earlier than expected.

As a general guideline, a made-to-order dress should be ordered at least 4–6 weeks in advance, with additional time allowed for delivery and any final preparation before the event. Waiting too long places pressure on a decision that should feel composed.

The best approach is to begin as soon as the occasion is confirmed.

If the Event Is Soon

Made-to-order is not always the right choice for a shorter timeline.

If the event is approaching quickly, ready-to-wear may be the more appropriate option. Not because it is lesser, but because it is more aligned with the reality of the moment.
